Super Visa Income Requirement: What Changed on March 31, 2026

A lot of clients have been asking me the same question lately: "My income on my Notice of Assessment isn't quite enough — does that mean I can't invite my parents on a Super Visa?" The short answer, as of March 31, 2026, is: not necessarily anymore. IRCC brought in new Ministerial Instructions that make it easier for hosts to qualify, and for the first time, the visiting parent or grandparent's own income can actually help. Let's break it down in simple terms.
What Is the Super Visa Income Requirement?
To sponsor a parent or grandparent for a Super Visa, the host in Canada has to show they meet the "minimum necessary income" — this is based on Statistics Canada's Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) plus 30%, and it depends on family size (how many people the host is already responsible for, plus the visitor(s) being invited). Hosts prove this with a Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the Canada Revenue Agency, or equivalent documents if they're self-employed.
What Actually Changed on March 31, 2026?
New Ministerial Instructions for the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa came into force on March 31, 2026, replacing the previous instructions from September 2023. All Super Visa applications already in processing, or submitted on or after that date, are assessed under the new rules. Two things changed:
You Can Now Use Either of the Last Two Tax Years
Before, hosts could only use their income from the most recent tax year. Now, the host's Notice of Assessment from either of the two tax years immediately before the application is submitted can be used — whichever one shows the higher (or sufficient) income.
Helpful if your income dropped in your most recent tax year (for example, due to job loss, parental leave, or a slow year for self-employment)
No need to explain a temporary dip — you can simply rely on the earlier year's NOA if it meets the requirement
The Visiting Parent or Grandparent's Own Income Can Now Help
This is the bigger change. If the host's income in the most recent tax year is at least 75% of the required minimum, the host can now add the visiting parent's or grandparent's own income to cover the rest.
The host must independently meet at least 75% of the required amount for their family size
The visiting parent or grandparent's own income (pension, employment income, investments, rental income, etc.) can be used to make up the remaining amount
There is no fixed ceiling on how much income the visiting parent or grandparent can show — they simply need to provide enough properly documented income to close the gap between the host's 75% and the full requirement
They must also show that this income will continue while they are visiting Canada, and the proof must state the currency it's paid in
Acceptable documents for the visiting parent or grandparent's income include:
Pay stubs from the most recent 12-month period
An original letter from an employer stating job title, job description, and salary
Bank statements from the last calendar year
Pension statements or proof of other income sources (investments, rental income, etc.)
2026 Minimum Necessary Income by Family Size:
1 person: $30,526
2 persons: $38,002
3 persons: $46,720
4 persons: $56,724
5 persons: $64,336
6 persons: $72,560
7 persons: $80,784
Each additional person: +$8,224
Family size here includes the host, the host's spouse or common-law partner, dependent children, previously sponsored persons still under undertaking, and the visiting parent(s)/grandparent(s) applying now.
Who Does This Help Most?
This change is especially useful for hosts who are self-employed with fluctuating income, who took time off work in the last year (parental leave, layoff, career change), or whose income is close to — but just under — the required amount. It's also good news for parents and grandparents who have their own pension, investments, or part-time work income and can now put that toward qualifying, instead of relying entirely on their child or grandchild's income in Canada.
Key Takeaways:
✅ New rules took effect March 31, 2026, for all Super Visa applications in processing or filed on/after that date
✅ Hosts can now use either of the last 2 tax years' NOA to meet the income requirement
✅ If the host meets at least 75% of the requirement, the visiting parent/grandparent's own income can cover the rest — with no set cap on how much they can show
✅ Proper documentation (pay stubs, employer letter, bank statements, pension proof) is required either way
✅ The base income table (LICO + 30%) itself has not changed — only how it can be met has
Don't Let an Avoidable Mistake Delay Your Parents' Visit
These changes open the door for a lot of families who were previously turned away over income shortfalls — but which option you should use, how much documentation your visiting parent or grandparent actually needs, and how it all gets presented to IRCC still has to be done right. One missing document or a wrongly calculated NOA year can mean a refusal and months of delay.

Parent and Grandparent Super Visa
Minimum Necessary Income
